Cell Phone Excuses

Cell phones have become a necessity these days. Almost everyone has one and quite a few flaunt the latest ones too. As much as the cell phone usage has increased, the excuses for not talking for long (for some calls) too have increased. And more so when people do not want to be caught at being in the wrong place at the right time or at the right place at the wrong time... Rather than not answering the call, they answer it and come up with the most innovative excuses. Here are some of the situations that I and a few of my friends have come across at different times-
1. While in loo, the gentleman answered his cell and said - "I am busy now. Will talk to you later."

2. While in loo, another gentleman (at another time) answered his cell and said - "I am in a meeting. Talk to you later." I wonder what was the meeting all about. Not that I am interested to know now. And neither was I interested in knowing it then.

3. Coming back to the loo (I believe this is the place where people's creativity is at its ultimate best) another gentleman said "I am out of office now. Will talk to you after I reach my desk." A perfect and a valid excuse since the loo on the floor was outside the office area.

4. One gentleman answered the phone while standing at the urinal and said - "Yaar, abhi baat nahi kar sakta. Phasa hua hoon..."

5. In a city like Mumbai, where people are always on the go, one comes across people who mislead (may not be intentionally) others into believing that they are almost there when they may be still some way to go. For instance, its 9 am, you are travelling in a train and have reached Malad; your fellow commuter receives a call. He is supposed to reach Andheri at 9 am. The gentleman answers the phone and says, he has almost reached Andheri and will be meeting the concerned person in 5 minutes. Any regular commuter knows that it takes 12 - 14 minutes to reach Andheri from Malad. And the gentleman says that he will reach in 5 minutes. Wow, that's quite a feat since he is travelling in the same train and I assume that he will continue doing so till he reaches Andheri. Unless he is Clark Kent (which I am sure he is not) and turns into Superman to reach Andheri in less than 5 minutes.

6. Another excuse that you might come across, especially in offices - (Almost) Everyone is in the cafetaria watching the match with lots of noise all around. Suddenly one gentleman gets a call on his cell. He goes to a corner where there is less / no noise, answers his phone and says "I am in a meeting, will talk to you later." How true - after all he is meeting so many people there.

7. And then there's another category of people, who believe in not answering the phone even when they are aware that the phone is ringing. And if the caller manages to get through and speak to them and ask them the reason for not answering, there is a standard response - "When did you call? My phone did not ring at all..." Over all these years, I and my friends have come across quite a few such incidents. But there are people who choose to answer the phone at almost any and every place in almost any and every situation and also continue their talks bindaas. While in the US, one day I was at office. Just as I was entering the washroom, another gentleman entered just before me. He was already on a call, and I guess it was his wife... While standing at the urinal, he continued his talk and then hung up with the words "Love you sweetheart. Bye. muaahh." I don't know whether to call the lady lucky or not... I mean, she is getting so much of love... I only hope she did not figure out that this guy was in the loo while mentioning sweet everythings... Another incident happened here in Mumbai. And coincidentally again in the loo... This gentleman was sitting inside peacefully, when suddenly his phone rang with some south indian caller tune. He cheerfully answered his phone and continued his talk (in some south indian language) bindaas without worrying about the place or the surroundings.

I am sure there will be many more such excuses / incidents that you might have come across. If you have never encountered any or never realized anything like this happening in your vicinity, keep your ears open and you will surely get to enjoy these gems soon... Till then keep smiling.
